A place for the details

From “paid”
to accounted for.

The invoice, the receipt, the line on the statement. Keep the records behind your numbers close at hand.

01

Invoices & payments

Prepare an invoice, record a payment and see what’s still outstanding. Keep partial payments and receipts with the work they belong to.

02

Expenses & records

Record purchases, split expenses between categories and attach receipts. Record transfers between your bank and card accounts.

03

Statements & reconciliation

Import a statement CSV for review. Match rows to recorded movements and resolve differences before verifying the statement.

04

Reports & handoff

Review income, expenses and account balances. Give your accountant read-only access or download a handoff archive.

One month at a time

A familiar rhythm.

Start with what you have.
Work through what came in and went out.

Review opening balances and outstanding invoices. Set starting statement balances for your bank and card accounts.

Create invoices, record money received and enter expenses. Attach the receipts while you have them in front of you.

Preview the CSV, check its columns and review each row. Match existing entries or record a new purchase, then check that the balances agree.

Review the reports, print what you need and download an accountant archive. Read-only access lets someone else look through the books without changing them.

For you. And whoever helps.

Keep the context
with the numbers.

You might do the books yourself, work with a bookkeeper or bring in an accountant at year-end. The records should still make sense to the next person who opens them.

  • Receipts attached to the transactions they explain
  • A searchable journal and a history of corrections
  • Read-only access for people reviewing your books
  • Reports and a downloadable accountant archive
A few practical questions

Built for a smaller business

The books deserve some attention.
They don’t need the whole day.

Start with invoices, expenses, statement review and reports. Star Books is being built around that everyday work.

Before you begin

The particulars.

A few things to know about the current preview.

Can I use Star Books yet?

The standalone application is in preview. Public paid launch is still being prepared. Get in touch to discuss the preview and whether it fits the way you keep your books.

What does it cost?

Launch pricing has not been finalized. We’ll share the available options and terms before you make a commitment.

Does it connect directly to my bank?

The current workflow uses CSV statement imports, with a preview before import and explicit matching during review. Automatic bank feeds are not part of the first release.

Can I bring my existing books?

You can review opening balances and outstanding invoices, then set starting balances for bank and card statements. This is a deliberate starting point for existing books, rather than an automatic migration of another application’s full history.

Which currencies are supported?

The current product supports a Canadian business in CAD or a US business in USD. Each ledger has one market and currency; foreign-exchange accounting is outside the first release.

What about payroll and tax filing?

Payroll and tax filing are outside the first release. Star Books keeps bookkeeping records and prepares reports and handoffs; your accountant can help determine what needs to be filed.

Who’s behind Star Books?

Star Books is part of BIAB, from Gather Social Technologies. The same accounting foundation also supports bookkeeping inside our service-business products. A standalone Star Books account has its own ledger; it doesn’t automatically synchronize with those products.
